What is Ulysses S. Grant famous for?

Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States. He was born in Ohio in 1822. Although he had previously served as a captain in the Mexican War (1846-1848), his rise to fame came during the American Civil War.

In 1861 he volunteered for the Union army and was quickly promoted to brigadier general. After the Battle of Shiloh, in which many Unionists were injured and killed, many people demanded President Abraham Lincoln to remove Grant from command. Lincoln refused, and by 1864 Grant was a general-in-chief. Through his determination and military strategies, he helped to crush the Confederate army, with Robert E. Lee surrendering in 1865. He was elected as President in 1868.
