The arnica flower is used to treat osteoarthritis and to reduce pain and swelling. It's also used to treat bruises, sprains, muscle aches, joint pain, insect bites, sore throats, stroke and acne, although more studies are needed to determine how effective arnica really is for the treatment of these ailments.

Arnica, which comes from the head of the arnica flower, is most readily available in the form of creams and ointments. It can also be found in oil, pill and injectable forms. It can be found at specialty stores, natural health stores, health food stores and pharmacies.

Those who take it should follow the directions on the label or consult a medical professional, especially if pregnant or breastfeeding. Although it's normally safe when used as an ointment on the skin, overuse can cause irritation, eczema, peeling and blisters. Those with broken skin should avoid using it. Caution needs to be exercised if arnica is used internally because it can cause dizziness, tremors, vomiting and heart irregularities.

Arnica flowers are recognizable by their hairy stems, bright green leaves and yellow-orange flowers. The blossoms resemble those of daisies. The plant grows up to 2 feet tall and has anywhere from one to three flowers.
