Two of the primary uses of synthetic winch rope are vehicle recovery and utility work across a range of applications in commercial, recreational and industrial contexts. Synthetic winch ropes are used in recreational winching and also by commercial tow trucks and wreckers.

The usual recreational use is to extract a bogged or stranded vehicle, but in competitive winching, synthetic winch ropes are also used creatively to get vehicles past obstacles to places they normally could not reach. Other commercial and industrial uses include use in arborist, military and marine utility work, such as offshore rigging, setting up power lines and poles, and moving rocks and trees.
