What is the Ford EcoBoost engine?

EcoBoost is a technology Ford integrates into some of its engines that uses a turbocharger paired with direct fuel injection. This technology provides better performance without decreasing mileage as much as other technologies.

While engines need fuel to run, they also need air; too much or too little air causes engines to operate inefficiently. Turbocharged engines force extra air into the combustion area and provide ample fuel to combust it efficiently. As a result, turbocharged engines provide comparable performance to larger engines but typically get better efficiency. Most engines use fuel injection technology instead of the carburetors older cars used. Ford's direct injection technology offered improved performance over other fuel injection techniques.
