"Veld" is a name given to many types of open country in South Africa that are used as pastures or farmland. South Africa has many types of velds depending on their climate.
The different kinds of velds include the high veld, middle veld, bush veld and grass veld. Generally, South Africans simply refer to all velds as "the veld," but sometimes they are distinguished by their physical features and elevation. For example, the Highveld is made up of high-plateau country and the Middleveld is the area north of Pretoria. Climate in these areas varies greatly and one veld can have a number of different climate conditions going on at one time.
