Where is Venice located?

Venice is located on the north end of the Adriatic Sea and is built over 118 islands. The city serves as the capital of both the province of Venice and the region of Veneto. The island city is connected with mainland Italy through a bridge that spans 2.5 miles.

According to a census in 2009, the population of Venice was approximately 270,660. Of this, only 60,000 people live in the historic city of Venice. The city features 160 canals that serve as water transportation routes for gondolas and powerboats. Streets in Venice are narrow and designed for pedestrian travel rather than vehicles.
