Where is Munich located?

Munich is located in southern Germany. It is the capital of Bavaria and is located around 30 miles north of the Alps mountain range. One of the cities main physical features is the Isar River, which flows through the city's center.

Munich, which means "home of the monks," began as a monastery. It started on the road to becoming a fully developed city in 1157 when the Duke of Bavaria allowed the monks to start a market. The town grew steadily in the 14th century and largely remained a constant population and size until the 18th century when it grew quickly until the Thirty Years' War.
