The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge is located between Brooklyn and Staten Island in New York. The ends of the bridge are at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and Fort Smith in Staten Island, forts that guarded New York Harbor for over a century.

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge provides the shortest route between the mid-Atlantic states and Long Island and is considered to be a major link in the interstate highway system. At the time of the bridge's opening in 1964, it was the world's largest suspension span. The Verrazano-Narrows bridge was named after Giovanni da Verrazano, the first European explorer who sailed into New York Harbor in 1524.
