When was the Washington Monument built?

The Washington Monument was built in two phases: the first between 1848 and 1854 and the second between 1876 and 1884. The first phase of construction continued until the monument stood 156 feet tall and the project ran out of funds.

The U.S. Civil War further delayed construction of the Washington Monument until the project was taken up again in 1876, and Congress took over the funding and building of the monument. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed construction of the 555 feet 5 1/8-inch obelisk on Dec. 6, 1884. A change in the color of the stone marks the different phases of construction because stone from the original quarry was no longer available after the delay, and a substitute had to be found. The Washington Monument was dedicated on Feb. 21, 1885, and it opened to the public on Oct. 9, 1888.
