What is a weeping crabapple?

A weeping crabapple is a flowering tree native to Asia, Europe and North America. It grows 20 feet tall and produces showy, white flowers in the spring and red crabapples during the fall and winter. They grow well in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 4, 5 and 6.

Because weeping crabapples cross-pollinate with apple trees, they are useful to people who only want to grow a single apple tree, because apple trees cannot pollinate themselves. For pollination purposes, weeping crabapples should be grown within 100 feet of other apple or crabapple trees. Weeping crabapple trees come in several varieties, some of which produce pink blossoms rather than white.
