Why were the Federalist Papers written?

The Federalist Papers were written in an attempt to get the New York citizens to ratify the United States Constitution in 1787. They were originally published using a pen name, "Publius," before being published in 1818 with the author's real names, which were James Madison, John Jay and Alexander Hamilton.
