James Madison had three brothers and three sisters who lived into adulthood: Francis, Ambrose, Nelly, William, Sarah and Frances. His parents had a total of 12 children. Five of Madison's siblings died either as infants or children.
Madison's brother Francis was a planter in Orange County, Virginia. His brother Ambrose was a captain in the Virginia militia. He was also a planter and oversaw the family's interests in Orange County. William Madison served during the Revolutionary War. He was also a lawyer and served in the Virginia legislature. All three of Madison's sisters, Nelly, Sarah and Frances, were married as adults.
