James and Leona McCauley were the parents of Rosa Parks. James was a carpenter, and Leona was a teacher. Rosa's parents had another child, Sylvester, two years after Rosa was born, but her parents separated soon after that time.

Rosa Parks was born on Feb. 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Ala. She moved with her parents to live with her maternal grandparents at age 2 in Pine Level, Ala. Rosa had to leave secondary school at age 16 to take care of her ailing grandmother and mother. Rosa married Raymond Parks at age 19 in 1932. Rosa Parks is well-known for her role as a civil rights activist and specifically for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white person in 1955.
