The identities of Sacagawea's parents are unknown, but historians do know she was the daughter of a Shoshone chief. Sacagawea was born in 1788.
When Sacagawea was between 10 to 12 years old, she was kidnapped by an enemy tribe and sold to a French-Canadian trapper who she was then forced to marry.
When Lewis and Clark arrived in 1804, it was understood that Sacagawea would accompany them on the expedition. She would join the group as an interpreter and as a "token of peace" to the other tribes they encountered on their journey. She stayed with the explorers until 1812.
