The wheel bug is not considered poisonous, although its bite can be extremely painful. The sharp pain of the wheel bug's bite is typically followed by numbness for days or weeks until fully healed. Redness of the skin and a burning sensation are also symptoms of a bite.
The wheel bug is one of the largest of all assassin bugs at approximately 1 to 1.5 inches in length. The body of the wheel bug is often gray or dark-gray in color with long legs and pronounced antennae. It is commonly found throughout the Eastern United States and preys upon insects, such as caterpillars and Japanese beetles. Due to its predation on common agricultural and garden pests, the wheel bug is considered beneficial.
