The Winchester Model 88 in .308 was first introduced in 1955. The Model 88 is the third-best selling lever action rifle in Winchester's history. Production was discontinued in 1973.
The Model 88 was designed for the then new Winchester .308 cartridge. A lever action rifle with bolt action features such as a four-shot detachable magazine, it allowed the use of high-powered, short-case cartridges with Spitzer bullets. Its manual action and front-locking bolt also made it popular with reloaders. The original Model 88 featured a one-piece pistol grip stock, point-checkered at the pistol grip and forearm. In 1964, the design was changed to an acorn and basket weave design.
