The Turks won the Battle of Gallipoli against an Allied naval offensive that aimed to seize Constantinople, which is present-day Istanbul. The Battle of Gallipoli is also known as the Gallipoli Campaign, Dardanelles Campaign or the Battle of Canakkale.
In 1915, Russia appealed to the Allied powers for aid in resisting a Turkish invasion of the Caucasus. Britain and France responded and launched an attack on the Gallipoli peninsula. Working against bad weather, the Allied nations sustained heavy damage to their fleet. The lack of immediate reinforcements allowed the Turks to fortify their defenses, which led to the eventual defeat of the campaign.
