What is the meaning of an elephant charm?

In Chinese culture, the meaning of the elephant symbolizes good luck. Often, an elephant figure on a charm will be holding a vase, in this instance wishing a person good luck and peace.
Elephant charms are also said to promote respect and love within a family, especially in elderly and infant care. In Chinese culture, an elephant charm should have the trunk facing downward. In Western culture, however, a downward trunk signifies mourning, and only an upward trunk has a meaning of good luck. The symbol of the white elephant is considered the most sacred, and has ties to Buddhist beliefs.
