A young elephant is called a calf. Adulthood doesn't begin until the calf, whether male or female, reaches 18 years of age. Beyond that, an elephant's expected lifespan is between 60 to 70 years.
Newborn elephant calves are completely reliant on their mothers for the first few months of life. In fact, elephant calves need their mothers well into their second year for both nutrition and protection. It's not just the mother elephants that nurture and coddle the young calves. Elephants are very protective of their young and, when a predator is near, the entire herd gathers together with the young calves in the center of the group.
