The country singer Merle Haggard co-wrote the song "Okie from Muskogee" with Roy Edward Burris. It was the title track of Haggard's 1969 album of the same name and became one of the most popular songs of his career.
Merle Haggard came up with the idea for "Okie from Muskogee" when he was released from San Quentin prison during the Vietnam War. After his release, he became angered to witness the anti-war protest that were occurring at the time and felt that the protesters were showing disrespect to the soldiers fighting the war. He claims to have been inspired to write the song for the soldiers.
