Christopher Columbus first sailed to find a western route to Asia in 1492. He left the Spanish port of Palos on Aug. 3 of that year with three ships: the Santa Maria, captained by Columbus himself, and the smaller Nina and Pinta, helmed by the Pinzon brothers.
Columbus' first expedition, financed by the Catholic Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella, didn't successfully find a route across the Atlantic to Asia. After a voyage of more than two months, the first expedition made landfall in the Bahamas. This journey ushered in centuries of sustained European relations with the Americas, consisting of exploration, conquest and colonization.
