Lina Medina was 5 years and 7 months old when she became a mother in 1939, making her the youngest person on record to give birth, according to Time Magazine. The Peruvian girl delivered a healthy baby boy by cesarean section.

Medina’s parents thought she had a large abdominal tumor when they took her to a hospital, where doctors confirmed the swelling was caused by pregnancy, reports Time Magazine. Her father was initially jailed on suspicion of incest but was released for lack of evidence. The identify of the baby’s father was never determined.

Doctors discovered the little girl began menstruating when she was 3, and had developed full breasts and the ovaries of a grown woman. Doctors believe a hormonal disorder in the pituitary gland may have triggered her early fertility.
