What is alcohol-free mouthwash?

An alcohol-free mouthwash is a mouthwash that does not contain alcohol as an agent to help clean the mouth. Instead, it can include other agents, such as cetylpyridinium chloride and sodium fluoride.
Dr. Philip Stemmer explains that alcohol in mouthwash reduces saliva production, which can make the mouth a perfect place for bad breath bacteria to grow. Also, a 2008 Newsweek article shows that alcohol-containing mouthwash is potentially dangerous to children. Because a child's liver is not fully developed, they cannot digest the alcohol properly, and side effects can be fatal if it is ingested in excess. Professionals now agree that people should use an alcohol-free mouthwash.
