Why does mouthwash burn?

Mouthwash gives a burning sensation during use because of the amount of alcohol it contains. Most mouthwash contains between 20 and 30 percent alcohol, which works as an antiseptic.

Although mouthwash is said to kill germs, the alcohol content in it is believed to have a number of negative effects. For instance, alcohol acts as a desiccant, which dries the skin of the mouth and promotes bad breath. It may also kill important skin cells in the mouth and lead to eventual sores in the oral cavity. Consumers worried about the alcohol content in mouthwash can opt for alcohol-free solutions.
