The Amur River ends at the Strait of Tartary, between the Russian island of Sakhalin and the Russian mainland. The river begins in Manchuria, at the confluence of the Argun and Shilka Rivers.
With a length of 1,755 miles, the Amur River is the longest river in the Russian Far East and the third-longest river in China. Over its course, the Amur River constitutes the border between Siberia and the Chinese province of Heilongjiang.
In China, the river is known as "Heilong Jiang," or "Black Dragon River," while in Mongolia, the people call it "Kharamuren," or "Black River." The name of the island "Sakhalin" comes from a Tungusic name for the Amur River.
