Jean M. Auel is the author of the "Earth's Children" book series. The fictional series, set over 30,000 years in the past, follows a young girl who fights for survival. The series consists of six novels.

The book series explores the lives of Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. Homo sapiens are modern-day humans, while Neanderthals are extinct relatives of modern-day humans. Some scientific research suggests Homo sapiens and Neanderthals lived together thousands of years ago.

In the first book, "The Clan of the Cave Bear," a Neanderthal clan rescues an injured and orphaned Homo sapien girl named Ayla. The series shows how Ayla overcomes alienation and adapts to her strange new world.
