Where are the Badlands in Philadelphia?

The Badlands is an informal name for an area of north Philadelphia that has experienced sustained high crime and drug trafficking since the 1980s. There are no fixed boundaries, but the area is generally thought to include the 25th police district and some adjacent neighborhoods.

The 25th police district had a very high murder rate in the late 1980s and early 1990s and has long been home to a number of gangs. The Badlands name was popularized by a series of "Nightline" episodes that covered crime in the region and the novel "Third and Indiana" by local journalist Steve Lopez.
