How big is the largest hippo?

The larger of the two hippopotamus species can weigh up to 4,500 kilograms, or 9,912 pounds, and can measure over 16 feet long. The pygmy hippopotamus is much smaller, with a maximum weight of about 275 kilos, or 605 pounds.

The hippopotamus ("hippo," for short) is a large, semi-aquatic animal native to Africa. It normally inhabits shallow lakes, rivers and swamps. Hippos are good swimmers and can move surprisingly fast on land as well. Hippos may look clumsy but are among the most dangerous large animals in Africa; the African Wildlife Foundation estimates that hippos kill nearly 3,000 people every year.
