Smith & Wesson M&P40 handguns are available for sale at local gun dealers, outdoor sporting retailers, such as Cabela's, and websites such as GunBroker.com. As of August 2015, Smith & Wesson offers 35 models in the M&P40 series.

A gun bought from an online seller is shipped to a local authorized firearms dealer. Some firearms are not legal to own in certain states or areas. In most cases, a buyer has to pass a background check in order to purchase a gun.

Smith & Wesson designed M&P guns for use by the military and police. M&P guns are semi-automatic pistols. Smith & Wesson has produced the M&P line since 2005.
