Homeowners can use CLR to clean a dishwasher, according to Jelmar, the company that produces the product. CLR Bath & Kitchen Cleaner can be an effective cleaner for removing calcium, lime and rust in the dishwasher.

To clean a dishwasher with CLR, use the following steps.

  1. Start a wash cycle on the dishwasher

    2. When the dishwasher is empty, start up a wash cycle. Do not add any soap to the machine.

  2. Add CLR

    3. When the machine is filled halfway with water, add 1/2 cup of CLR to the machine.

  3. Rinse the machine

    4. Run another wash cycle without any soap or CLR to rinse out the machine.
