Can dogs eat ice cream?

While some dogs can eat ice cream without experiencing any issues, other dogs are lactose intolerant. These dogs may experience gas, diarrhea or vomiting after consuming ice cream.
Dairy products are considered safe for dogs, but foods higher in lactose are more likely to cause digestive issues. There are 6 grams of lactose in 1/2 cup of ice cream, compared to 1 gram of lactose in an ounce of Swiss cheese and 11 grams of lactose in a cup of whole milk. Low-lactose frozen treats specially formulated for dogs are an option to consider when feeding ice cream to dogs.
