What can I give a small dog for constipation?

For a dog weighing less than 15 pounds, 1 to 2 teaspoons of pureed pumpkin is an effective for treatment for constipation. The high fiber and water content of pumpkin softens the stools, and the puree is easily blended into dog food.

It is important to not give pumpkin pie filling to a dog. Only canned pumpkin or freshly pureed pumpkin is appropriate. If the dog’s stool has the consistency of pudding, reduce the amount of pumpkin mixed onto the dog's food. Alternatively, one-half teaspoon of a fiber supplement, such as Metamucil, and additional water can also be added to a small dog’s food to treat constipation.
