While most people only experience one episode of shingles, it is possible for the virus to recur, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Around half of all shingles patients are adults 60 years of age and older.
Any person with a history of chickenpox can get shingles, states the CDC. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus stays in the body in an inactive state. If it reactivates, the person develops shingles. Individuals who have compromised immune systems or are taking medications that suppress the immune system have an increased risk of getting shingles. Shingles usually manifests as a painful rash on one side of the face or body.
