According to About.com Health, IUDs are between 99.2 and 99.9 percent effective, depending on the type of IUD. Therefore, approximately one in 100 women will become pregnant with an IUD.
The Mirena IUD is 99.9 percent effective, making it more effective than the ParaGard IUD which is 99.2 to 99.4 percent effective. About.com Health states that if a woman does become pregnant with an IUD in place, a doctor will recommend that the IUD is removed, as it is healthier than continuing the pregnancy without removing it. When a woman keeps an IUD in place during pregnancy, the miscarriage rate is 50 percent, compared to a normal miscarriage rate of 18 to 20 percent, according to About.com Health.
