According to the Mayo Clinic, ketoconazole cream is useful for treating the ringworm infection known as "jock itch." WebMD states that ringworm is not a parasitic disease but a skin infection caused by a fungus.
MedLine Plus reports that the cream is typically applied daily for two to six weeks. In addition, it must be used for the full amount of time recommended. If stopped too early, the infection often shows up again.
The Mayo Clinic advises that while some forms of ketoconazole cream are available over the counter, most are prescription medications. Ketoconazole cream is intended for use by patients 12 years of age and older.
