According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), the human stomach is an elastic organ that can expand to hold from 0.25 to 1.7 L of contents without causing any discomfort. The average human stomach has a capacity of roughly 1 L, or a little more than a quart.

The actual capacity of the human stomach greatly depends on its geometry, which is influenced by the body position, the condition of surrounding organs and the type of food eaten, the NCBI further explains. According to the Physics Factbook, the stomach can reach the maximum capacity of 2 to 4 L with huge meals or overeating.
