What is the capital of Maine?

The capital of Maine is Augusta. The town of Augusta was formed in 1799, before Maine was officially a state. When Maine became the 23rd state in 1820, it named Portland, Maine as the state capital. In 1827, however, the state of Maine designated Augusta as the state capital instead.

Although then-Governor Enoch Lincoln signed the bill in 1827 to make the town of Augusta the state capital, the state government continued to work in Portland while a new state building was being constructed. The first state legislation in Augusta occurred in 1832. The town of Augusta officially became a city in 1849.
