What is the capital of Wisconsin?

Wisconsin's capital city is Madison, a city of 233,000 people as of 2014. Located in the south of the state, Madison is more than just the state capital; the city also serves as the seat of the surrounding Dane County.

Madison was founded in 1829 as a small settlement located in the swamp between two lakes. As a result of heavy lobbying by its founder, James Doty, the city was chosen as Wisconsin's capital even before its streets had been laid out. Madison became the state capital in 1836, a full 12 years before it was formally incorporated as a city. Madison was named in honor of President James Madison, who had died a few months before.
