What causes sharp pain in the left ovary before a period?

One cause of pain in the left ovary before a period is ovulation, according to Mayo Clinic. However, other explanations for ovarian pain include cysts, tumors, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease and ovarian remnant syndrome, WebMD highlights.

Some causes of left sided ovarian pain include:

• Mittelschmerz, also known as ovulation, is ovarian pain that occurs around 14 days before menstruating. It does not occur in all women, and it is possible to treat it with over the counter painkillers.
• Ovarian cysts are fluid filled sacs that sit on the ovaries. They can cause sharp pains if one twists or ruptures, but are usually symptomless.
• Both benign and malignant ovarian tumors can cause pain. Alongside the pain there is sometimes bloating, the frequent urge to urinate, indigestion and diarrhea or constipation.
• When endometriosis develops around the ovaries, it can cause ovarian pain. Alongside this, patients may experience painful periods, heavy bleeding and infertility problems.
• Pelvic inflammatory disease is one of the most common causes of ovarian pain. It occurs when a sexually transmitted disease like chlamydia or gonorrhea causes scarring along the fallopian tubes. Patients may also experience pain during intercourse, irregular menstrual bleeding and foul smelling discharge.
• Some women may experience ovarian remnant syndrome following a hysterectomy. This occurs when part of the ovaries is left behind, and may be accompanied by pain during intercourse.
