Who is in charge of the House of Representatives?

The individual who is designated as the speaker is in charge of the House of Representatives. The speaker also falls immediately after the vice president in the line of succession for the U.S. presidency.

The House chooses its speaker on the first day of a new Congress, and the individual is usually a member of the party that holds the House majority. The House speaker sets the legislative agenda. Other House leaders include the majority and minority leaders of each party. Representatives who serve as whips are charged with promoting their party's agenda and convincing other representatives to support various legislation.
