The state with the lowest cost of living in 2014 was Mississippi, according to the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center's annual cost of living data series. This data is based on reports from cities and metropolitan areas in each state.
In general, the lowest cost of living is found in non-coastal Southeastern states and Midwestern states. In the West, Texas, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming were among the states in the lowest cost of living grouping. The highest cost of living in the nation is in California, Oregon and most of the Northeastern states.
