The average American retires at the age of 62, according to a 2014 Gallup poll. There has been a gap between poll findings between expected age of retirement and actual age of retirement since 2002.
In 2002 Americans retired at an average age of 59, while non-retirees in 2002 reported an expected age of retirement of 63, according to the Gallup poll. The actual age of retirement remained 59 until 2005, when the age of actual retirement on average settled at 60 years. After a dip in the actual retirement age average in 2010, the average age of retirement for Americans has risen slightly to 62 as of 2014.
