As of August 2015, the National Vital Statistics System has released only its preliminary report on 2014 births in the United States. According to this preliminary data report, based on 99.71% of the birth information that the U.S. government collected, there were 3,985,924 births in the U.S. in 2014.
The National Vital Statistics System operates under the umbrellas of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Center for Health Statistics. The NVSS bases its reports on data derived from birth certificates and various surveys administered at hospitals nationally.
