The Maid-Rite sandwich was created by Fred Angell, a butcher from Muscatine, Iowa. It is a combination of selected spices and a special cut of meat that is served loose as opposed to a patty. The presentation is similar to that of a Sloppy Joe.
Angell opened his first restaurant in 1926 to feature his innovative sandwich, and, as of 2006, Maid-Rite had over 70 locations. The states that currently have a Maid-Rite restaurant are Arkansas, Ohio, Nebraska, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri and Iowa. Maid-Rite is a franchise and also has a deal with the grocer Hy-Vee to open restaurants in its grocery stores.
