Where do darkling beetles live?

According to the Woodland Park Zoo, darkling beetles are most well-adapted to life in regions with arid climates, but they are also present in many other habitats. Most of the 1,400 species of darkling beetles in North America live in the western United States.

The Woodland Park Zoo states that darkling beetles are relatively rare in the eastern United States, with only around 150 species occurring there. The beetles are around 1.5 inches long with a single pair of antennae. Darkling beetles have wings, but they are incapable of flight because the wings are fused. A darkling beetle's lifespan can range from three to 15 years.
