What does a date palm tree look like?

A date palm is similar in appearance to a traditional palm tree. It has a thick base and grows more slender as it branches out into fibrous, spiky palm leaves. Bunches of dates grow at the apex of the branches and trunk and are tan in color.
The trunk of the date palm is rough and husk-like and peels off in shaggy sections all the way to the leafy portion of the tree. The palm matures and begins to produce dates after about eight years. The tree can produce dates for more than 20 years after maturation. These dates are high in fiber and sugar and yield an oil that has many applications.
