Southwestern Louisiana's Lake Charles has a maximum depth of roughly 40 feet. While much of the lake is shallower, the Calcasieu Ship Channel at the western side of the lake was dredged to enable large vessels to pass through.

The city of Lake Charles, commonly known as the Lake Area, borders Lake Charles, Prien Lake and the Calcasieu River, which connects Lake Charles to the Gulf of Mexico 34 miles away. As of 2015, the port of Lake Charles is the 12th largest seaport in the United States and is important in the transport of bagged rice, flour, paper products, petroleum products and other goods.
