Helen Keller was born and raised in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She is best known for her accomplishments as an educator and journalist despite being blind and deaf. Her teacher, Annie Sullivan, worked with her throughout her life.
Born on June 27, 1880, Helen Keller became blind and deaf after catching what was called "brain fever" in 1882. Since she could not hear, Helen was unable to speak for the first few years of her life. In March 1887, the Perkins School for the blind sent Annie Sullivan to the Keller's to help with Helen. Annie Sullivan taught Helen to speak, read braille and use sign language, allowing her to go on to attend Radcliffe College, write books and travel. Helen Keller died in 1968.
