Hurricane Charley hit Florida, North Carolina and the Caribbean in August of 2004. The hurricane also affected Cuba and Jamaica.
The deadly hurricane formed on August 9, 2004, and dissipated on August 15, 2004, causing more than $5.4 billion in damages in the state of Florida alone. Eight people died in Florida during the storm and as many as 800 were injured. The hurricane had wind speeds of 150 mph, officially classifying it as a Category 4 storm. In total, 15 direct deaths and 20 indirect deaths around the world were linked to the massive storm. Other U.S. states affected by the hurricane include South Carolina, Rhode Island and Virginia. However, none of these states suffered as much damage as Florida, which was declared a federal disaster area.
