The Lipan Apache originally inhabited the northern panhandle area of Texas, but were pushed southward to the southern tip of Texas when the Comanche invaded and eventually settled in Mexico. The Lipan came to the area as refugees and settled around Spanish missions seeking aid.
The Lipan originally sought aid from the missions, but they were treated poorly and revolted. They then settled along the Gulf Coast in the area of the lower Rio Grande.
In the 1860s the Lipan moved south into Mexico and conducted raids against South Texas. American forces captured their villages in 1873 and put them on reservations in New Mexico with the Mescalero Apache.
